And though there are Amazonian freshwater dolphin species alive today, they aren’t close kin to that ancient cetacean. There’s the South Asian river dolphin (Platanista genus) and the Amazon river dolphin (Inia genus), also known as the pink river dolphin, and the two groups include several species and subspecies. Researchers discovered the Amazonian dolphin fossil in 2018, near the Napo River in Loreto, Peru. At first, they thought it would turn out to be an ancient relative of modern Amazonian river dolphins. “That was a moment where everybody freaked out, because it wasn’t an Amazonian river dolphin,” Benites-Palomino said.

"The liquidity conditions in the euro area banking system is another area to monitor, since it plays a role for transmitting monetary policy and, consequently, affects inflation," he said. The ECB has raised its deposit rate to a record high 4% but has signalled a pause for the months ahead on tentative signs inflation is coming under control. Headline inflation in the 20 countries using the euro eased to 4.3% in September, the lowest pace since October 2021, from 5.2% a month earlier.

LIMA, Peru (AP) — Some archaeologists describe Peru’s capital as an onion with many layers of history, others consider it a box of surprises. That's what some gas line workers got when their digging uncovered eight pre-Inca funeral bales. The city also has more than 400 larger archaeological sites that have turned up scattered through the urban landscape. The company’s archaeologists believe the finds belong to the pre-Inca culture called Ichma. The eight burial bundles were found near some braised chicken restaurants and a road that leads to Peru’s only nuclear power station.

"This is an adult individual in a sitting position with bent legs," the expert said, noting that the mummy had long hair and a jaw that was nearly completely intact. ANCASH, Peru, July 12 (Reuters) - Archaeologists working in Peru have uncovered a 3,000-year-old sealed corridor dubbed "the condor's passageway" that likely leads to other chambers inside what was once a massive temple complex pertaining to the ancient Chavin culture. Located around 190 miles (306 km) northeast of Lima, the Chavin de Huantar archeological site is among the culture's most important centers, thriving from around 1,500-550 B.C. The temple complex features terraces as well as a network of passageways, which have only recently been discovered. Rick, a Stanford University archeologist, has said much of the temple complex remains to be excavated. The United Nations' educational, scientific and cultural arm UNESCO declared Chavin de Huantar a world heritage site in 1985.

Students from San Marcos University and researchers initially found remains of the mummy's hair and skull in a cotton bundle during excavation, before uncovering the rest of the mummy. The person "had been left or offered (as a sacrifice) during the last phase of the construction of this temple," Aguilar said.
